White Cloud Mountain

Today Rupert and I took a taxi to White Cloud Mountain (Baiyun Mountain) and took a cable car/gondola up the mountain. It was cloudy when we left the hotel, sprinkling when we got there, and steady rain at the top. The mountain got its name because every time the sun shines after a rainstorm, a band of clouds circle the mountain. Of course, since we were there during a rainstorm, we were IN the clouds! We walked down MANY stairs to read a series of AMAZING temples (Negren Temple). The first one we came to was Guan Yin, so we knelt and said a prayer for our two boys. We visted the other temples and came across a beautiful pond with turtles and fish. Amazing to us was the thought that when these elaborate temples were built, the materials and equipment was hand carried up the mountain! The walk back up the steps was STRENUOUS and a little scary since they were so wet. We then took the gondola back down the mountain.
We were easily able to get a taxi back to our hotel. The cost was only 35 yuan - so inexpensive!
Although the weather was not great, and we were in the clouds without the nice view of Guangzhou, I'm still glad we went because it would not have been possible to walk those stairs to the temples with a child!
We just ate lunch and are heading out for some shopping this afternoon.
